There is a long tradition of paper production in the Miesbach region: Büttenpapierfabrik Gmund manufactures fine paper since 1829, Papierfabrik Louisenthal is specialized on banknotes and security paper since 1879. In the course of an increased demand for all types of paper products, there have been more foundations of enterprises for example Kroha GmbH, whose main focus is on the production of package for the pharmaceutical industry. The internationalisation of the location in the last years can be seen as evidence for the area’s attractiveness (CCL Label and Avery Dennison).
The Miesbach area is traditionally home to many wood working companies. The reason for that is obvious: Wood is one of the most significant renewables, all-season available and without big efforts transportable. Miesbach based companies benefit from that. For example Schreinerei Josef Eham GmbH, that manufactures premium wood interior. Timber can be also seen as construction material for the future. There are some companies in the area which have realized that already decades ago. Miesbacher Holzhaus Anton Killer GmbH has existed for more than 25 years, Isartaler Holzhaus Oberlandhaus GmbH & Co. KG even for 85 years.
The pharmaceutical industry is represented in Miesbach by several companies. The most famous employer is Novartis AG with its subsidiaries Hexal AG and Sandoz Pharmaceuticals GmbH in Holzkirchen. Acino AG is the second largest european producer of therapeutic patches. Medical technology is another important sector: OPED GmbH for example is a known all over the world as a successful company focusing on the development and marketing of orthopaedic rehabilitation products.
Throughout the district there are numerous producers of premium foodstuffs and stimulants. You can find agricultural products for the regional market as well as nationwide known brands such as Herzogliches Brauhaus Tegernsee and Miesbacher Weißbierbrauerei Hopf. Destillerie Lantenhammer is well-established due to its brandies and the first bavarian malt whisky. Eybel is a producer of exquisite chocolate and pralines. The predominantly medium-sized food makers in the Miesbach area managed to etablish themselves on the market. This attributes to both traditional manufacturing processes and effective product innovation.
